Staying on Course

I-Pod Applications Allow User to Take Lessons to the Course

While most golf instruction books and DVDs focus on the basics of the game, a new interactive DVD, Staying on Course: Mastering Golf's Most Challenging Shots (CyberVision Text, Inc., $39.95), offers practical advice on how to handle more than 50 difficult shots that can occur during a round of golf.

Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Nancy Quarcelino and LPGA Professional Rita Reasons provide easy-to-follow instruction on challenging situations golfers face from tee to green, ranging from hitting a ball from a sand-filled divot to playing from fairway bunkers. The DVD has text, much like a traditional book, offering information on how to play each shot. Short video clips can be accessed showing each shot being played for visual support.

"As longtime teachers of the game, Rita and I have worked with golfers of all skill levels. We know there's only so much you can do with your students on the range and the practice areas," said Quarcelino. "Most golfers will come across shots they have never practiced over the course of a round. This could include a shot from a hardpan lie, hitting out of mulch or determining whether to chip or putt when a ball is against the fringe.

"If a golfer understands how to play these types of shots, they can improve their game. We want to help them take that knowledge to the course with them."

They are doing this by also including an application allowing for the information to be downloaded to I-Pods. "Technology is important to today's consumer. We wanted to provide our content in as many forms as possible so they can access the information at any time or place," she added.

Staying on Course features seven chapters with more than 50 different shots:

  • Shots from the Tee
  • Shots in the Fairway
  • Fairway Bunkers
  • Playing the Ball from Outside the Fairway
  • Greenside Bunkers
  • Shots Around the Green
  • Shots on the Putting Green
